At iD Tech BattleBots® Camp at San Francisco State University, teens (ages 13-17) engineer and program VEX robots for BattleBots®-style competitions. The camp focuses on hands-on learning where students build a custom robot using VEX V5 hardware, program its behaviors and controls using C++, and explore mechanical engineering principles. Campers also learn how 3D printers and slicing software work, enabling them to model and print custom robot parts for their creations. The week culminates in a BattleBots®-style tournament where students showcase their optimized robots in a series of challenges like racing, obstacle courses, and capture the flag. Through this immersive experience, participants gain practical skills in robotics, programming, 3D design, and problem-solving, fostering creativity and teamwork in a competitive yet supportive environment. They leave with an official iD Tech diploma and course transcript, outlining the skills learned, and a take-home robot with 3D-printed parts.
A typical day includes morning announcements and icebreakers, coursework in labs, lunch in the campus dining hall, more instruction in the afternoon, followed by outdoor games or campus exploration, and wrapping up with continued project work.
