About this camp

The Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) Biotechnology Summer Experience is a two-week, in-person program designed for rising 11th and 12th-grade high school students. Participants engage in an authentic research project in molecular biology and bioinformatics, focusing on the isolation, characterization, and DNA sequence analyses of genes from the duckweed species, Landoltia punctata. Students gain hands-on laboratory experience by performing techniques such as PCR (polymerase chain reaction), restriction digests, and gel electrophoresis to isolate and study DNA. They also learn to analyze gene sequences using the same bioinformatics tools employed by practicing scientists. A significant outcome of the program is the submission of vetted DNA sequences for publication in GenBank, an international DNA repository, with each student acknowledged by name for their contribution. The program aims to strengthen critical thinking and laboratory skills while exposing students to potential career pathways in biotechnology and related STEM fields.

What a typical day looks like

A typical day involves hands-on laboratory experiments, instruction from master teachers and LLNL faculty scholars, and analysis of gene sequences using bioinformatics tools.

Best suited for

This program is best for high school students aged 16 or older who are interested in molecular biology and bioinformatics research, and who meet specific academic and residency requirements.
